Jasmine Birks

Artist Statement

My work most often takes the form of paintings and drawings as well as digital media. In painting, I tend to gravitate towards watercolour and acrylic paints paired with the incorporation of textures. This adds another dimension to the canvas and gives it character. I like to use embroidery, plaster, metal wire and origami to amplify specific key areas. Often, my work tends to have a distinct political and racial stance. I like to use soft colours and delicate forms to create contrast with my harsher subject of inequality in modern society. In the end, I reflect on current issues that minority groups may experience and sometimes use my own reality to tackle these issues.
