Artist Statement
As someone who struggled with mental health for years, I looked for ways I can express my heavy emotions. Words were never enough. I turned to art because it can change and evolve with me. Art inspires me and makes me feel vulnerable. I can vent and express my emotions, unfiltered.
My biggest goal is for my work to inspire others, make them feel something. Repulsion, sadness, anger, happiness, hope, etc.
I am an empath and I have no shame in that. I struggled for years, to tell people how and what I was feeling, and I want others to know that they shouldn’t be afraid to be open. My interactive work “The Confession” fulfills this wish. I asked people in my surroundings to submit “confessions”, secrets, stories and thoughts to my piece. I used their words anonymously in my project.
“Confessions” was a painting that had to be touched to work. For this final project in the ALC studio arts profile, I decided to create a virtual version without the interaction. I created animations that reveal 10 of the confessions I received. I would refer to them more as Internet art or Sound art.
I hope everyone who sees my project realizes that they are not alone and that bottling up their emotions will harm them. I encourage everyone to let go of their burdens and share their “confessions” with others.
